If you are considering a move from up North to Columbia, South Carolina there are some changes you will encounter. We have a Southern climate and we dress for the weather.
If there is snow, there is no school! The entire city shuts down when any snow flurries hit the ground. The reason for this is simple, Columbia doesn't have any systems in place for snow and ice or all the accidents that can happen as a result. So, not only do we not have to shovel snow, when it snows we don't work or go to school!
Hot, Hot, Hot Summers! If you are moving to Columbia, SC consider looking at homes in a neighborhood with a community swimming pool. The pool dues are normally paid with your home owners association fees. If while shopping for a home you see a home with a private in-ground pool that you can afford, buy it. The home value doesn't increase with a pool so you are buying a house and getting a pool for free. The average price for installing an in-ground swimming pool is $15,000 for a pool with vinyl liner.
Lake Murray is a great summer escape. Lake Murray is 50,000 acres large and has depths up to 200 feet. The shoreline of Lake Murray is more than 500 miles. That is 500 miles of fun. Residents of Columbia, Lexington, and Irmo all enjoy summertime recreation at Lake Murray. On any given day one can see ski boats, pontoon boats, wave runners and sail boats on the lake. If you can afford a home on Lake Murray, you should buy one. The value of Lake Murray real estate is ever increasing (they are not making any more of it).
We wear short pants year round. I know it sounds crazy but in the South we wear short pants year round. We wear them with suit coats to work. We wear them with sweaters in the Winter. We dress them up with heels or dress them down with flats. If you do not have short pants, you can buy them when you get here!
If you are considering a move to Columbia, SC embrace the change. Throw out your old snow boots and come down and put on some flip flops. We will be waiting for you at the pool.
