Downtown Columbia is the heart of the state of South Carolina. Downtown Columbia is home to South Carolina's State House and The Supreme Court. The Governor's house is in Downtown Columbia.
There is plenty to do in Downtown Columbia. There is the Colonial Center for concerts, The Koger Center for Broadway shows and The Carolina Coliseum for a basketball game. Downtown also has namy theaters with local talent. Children will enjoy EdVenture Kids Museum. A couple of other Downtown Columbia museums are The South Carolina State Museum and The Columbia Museum of Art.
The Main Richland County Public Library is located in Downtown Columbia. It holds 1,134,803 books; 45,554 audio materials; 30,630 video materials;and 2,840 serial subscriptions. The Main Richland County library is several stories tall and a beautiful building. It has a special floor for children with murals on the walls and lots of different things to do. Many of the library resources can be accessed by computer.
The University of South Carolina is located in Downtown Columbia. The Columbia school has more than 350 degree programs. USC has more than 27,000 students and more than 1,600 full time falcuty. The University of South Carolina has more than 200 years of history. The heart of the campus, The Horseshoe, is a great place for a stroll or a picnic.
If you are looking for nightlife, Downtown Columbia has that too. 5-Points is a section of town that locals and students alike visit for food, fun and entertainment. The Vista is a revitalized section of Downtown with upscale restaurants, galleries and clubs.

There are many different downtown Columbia SC neighborhoods. Some of my favorites are Earlewood, Elmwood Park, Forest Hills (where I live), Gregg Park, Heathwood, Lake Katherine, Melrose Heights, Rosewood, Shandon and Wheeler Hill.
